Hillsborough County is the heart of Tampa Bay's inshore fishery, offering access to one of Florida's largest estuaries right in the shadow of a major city. The upper Tampa Bay flats — from Apollo Beach to Weedon Island — hold Redfish and Spotted Seatrout year-round, with some of the best fall and winter trout fishing in the state. Hillsborough Bay's dock lights are legendary for nighttime Snook fishing from late spring through fall, and the Alafia River and Little Manatee River provide protected backcountry access for Snook and Redfish during cold fronts. The Courtney Campbell Causeway and Gandy Bridge pile up Sheepshead in winter. Offshore anglers access the Gulf of Mexico through the mouth of Tampa Bay, targeting Grouper and Snapper on nearshore hard bottom.
