Tides & Timing β€” The Apalachicola Cheat Code

The Golden Rule

Apalachicola Bay is one of Florida's most productive ecosystems. Tidal flow in and out of the bay is strong β€” use it. Incoming tides push baitfish onto shallow oyster bars. Outgoing tides concentrate fish at the mouths. The Wakulla River spring-fed water stays clear year-round.

Incoming Tide

Baitfish onto oyster bars. Redfish feed aggressively. Best early light.

High Tide

Fish spread throughout flooded flats. Sight-fishing excellent on clear mornings.

Outgoing Tide

Bay mouths concentrate redfish and flounder. Current focuses aggressive fish.

Low Tide

Sight-fish tailing redfish on exposed flats. Move slowly and keep distance.

Top Spots by Season

Spring (Mar–May)

Spawning sheepshead at structures. Redfish feed aggressively. St George Island becomes a sight-fishing paradise.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Fish move deeper in bay. Wakulla River stay clear and cool. Tarpon summer run possible.

Fall (Sep–Nov)

Spanish mackerel return. Flounder stage at bay mouths. Trophy trout on deep flats.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

Trophy seatrout on flats. Sheepshead stack at St Marks and structures. Big flounder in holes.
